Cover Story

Editorial Policy

Smooth Jazz News is contemporary jazz lifestyle magazine which only covers smooth jazz artists, CDs and events. Our artist features, CD reviews and featured festival profiles are based on quality, newsworthiness and timeliness, among other criteria. It is our goal to present the best in smooth jazz, therefore we do not engage in music criticism.

Each year, our editorial budget allows us space for 11 cover stories, approximately 20 other features and 20 CD reviews.  Although we would love to feature many more artists and CD reviews than we currently do, the basic economics of standard advertising-to-editorial ratios afford us to accommodate only a fraction of the more than 600 unsolicited publicity requests we receive annually.

Our editorial content is budgeted in December for each upcoming year. The majority of our cover stories, features, CD reviews, etc. for our 2009 publication year have already been determined and budgeted for.

Editorial Decisions

Editorial is chosen by our editorial committee of passionate, qualified smooth jazz journalistic professionals and is based on a variety of factors. We listen to all CDs that are submitted to us and consider the highest quality projects to fill the slots of our approximately two-dozen review spaces budgeted per year.

The music is what we listen to and influences our editorial decisions (not a manager’s or publicist’s pitch). If we like the project and have the budget and space available, we will consider it for publication.

Please note that contributing writers do not make editorial decisions for Smooth Jazz News.
