The 27th Annual Long Beach Jazz Festival will be filled with memory-making music, mingling, tasty festival fare and unique merchandise this weekend, Aug. 9-10. Among the many headliners, Al Jarreau will recall fond memories of the late George Duke with a musical tribute to his longtime friend on Sunday. The GRAMMY-winning vocalist will surely include songs from his new album My Old Friend: Celebrating George Duke. Jarreau re-interprets some of Duke’s renowned catalog on this album, which was released by Concord Records today, Aug. 5, 2014 (one year ago to the day that the 67-year-old Duke passed away from heart complications caused by treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukemia.)

The festival founder, Al Williams, and his Jazz Society featuring Ronnie Laws, Wilton Felder and special guests (TBA) are scheduled to perform a tribute to Wayne Henderson on Saturday. The 74-year-old trombonist and founding member of the Jazz Crusaders died from heart failure triggered by diabetes on April 5.

With health on the minds and hearts of Williams and his daughter Kimberly Benoit (who has taken over the helm of Rainbow Promotions, the family business), they are bringing back for a second year, the Health & Wellness Pavilion. Located in the food court and vendor area, this section will offer festivalgoers a total de-stressing experience (mind, body, spirit) all in one location, with a second stage for more live music. Inspirational and expert wellness speakers, treatment centers and healthy food sampling will offer attendees the tools to live healthier, feel energized and focused. Participating in the Health & Wellness Pavilion are the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, City of Hope’s Be the Match Bone Marrow Donor Program, K.I.S. Foundation (Kiki Shepard’s Sickle Cell Foundation), Triple Step Toward The Cure Breast Cancer Foundation and more.

     The festival lineup includes:

Saturday, Aug. 9: Tyrese, Ramsey Lewis, Rachelle Ferrell, Najee, Michael Lington, Jesse Boykins III, Lee England Jr.

Sunday, Aug. 10: Lalah Hathaway; Will Downing; Al Jarreau; Daley; Hiroshima; Al Williams Jazz Society featuring Ronnie Laws, Wilton Felder and more in a tribute to Wayne Henderson; Rick Parma

The Long Beach Jazz Festival will be held each day from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. at Rainbow Lagoon Park, E. Shoreline Dr. and Linden Ave., in Long Beach, California. For tickets and information, visit www.longbeachjazzfestival.com or call 562-424-0013.

This weekly series offers pairings of Kendall-Jackson wines expertly selected to compliment and enhance the nuanced flavor of XAN Confections chocolates. And, of course, the highlight for me is the great smooth jazz that accompanies it all. Today, guitarist Chris Standring is scheduled to perform at 5:30 p.m.

Art, Jazz, Wine and Chocolate costs $15 per person with purchase of Festival of Arts admission. Festival of Arts is located at 650 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach, California. For tickets and information, visit www.foapom.com/events/art-jazz-wine-chocolate/ or call 949-494-1145.

Brunch buffet at Spaghettini Fine Dining & Entertainment

Brunch buffet at Spaghettini Fine Dining & Entertainment

The best thing about being in Southern California on a Sunday morning is the legendary jazz brunch at Spaghettini Fine Dining & Entertainment in Seal Beach. One of my favorite bands, DW3, will be performing in the lounge on July 20, which often sells out. However, there will probably be seating available in the restaurant, where you can still hear this group’s wonderful brand of R&B originals and interpretation of old school hits.

Later that afternoon, you’ll want to head back to the Hyatt for the 16th Annual Eric Marienthal & Friends Benefit Concert for High Hopes Head Injury Program. General admission is $55 and includes the concert, a no-host bar and hors d’oeuvres.

The event also features a raffle and live and silent auctions.

All proceeds from the event will go directly to High Hopes Head Injury Program, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, which is dedicated to helping brain-injured adults regain their independence, through low-cost rehabilitation and care.

With so many jazz happenings close by, you may as well just check into the Hyatt for the weekend. But you’ll want to keep your room through Sunday because, most likely, you will need a nap after enjoying brunch at Spaghettini, and you’ll want to be well rested for the Eric Marienthal & Friends benefit concert that evening.

Festival of Arts & Pageant of the Masters…WOW!

Dancing at Festival of Arts

Dancing at Festival of Arts

The courtyard was packed with a colorfully dressed, multi-generational crowd dancing to a live band performing covers of Earth Wind & Fire, Michael Jackson and other make-your-hips-shake-like-Shakira R&B and pop hits. I wasn’t sure if I was at a concert or the Festival of Arts opening night preview party. I’m certain the stilt walkers who were in the middle of it, twirling the average-height people around, had a great view of the wall-to-wall patrons perusing the perimeter filled with beautiful exhibits displaying paintings, sculptures, jewelry, glass creations, ceramics, hand-crafted wood and furniture, photography, mixed media and other fine art.

This press event, held on July 5, the night before the Festival of Arts opened to the public, wasn’t just an exclusive brand of super-carbonated entertainment for professional media, it truly exemplified what can be expected by any paying customer. Although journalists, photographers and other professionals were treated to the free show with complimentary hors d’oeuvres, Italian sodas, water (not offered free to the general public) and a cash wine bar, the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts is definitely a whole lot of fun and quite the artistic experience for everyone. It also allows patrons an opportunity to interact with many of the 140 finest artists in Orange County at this highly acclaimed juried fine art show. However, I’m especially looking forward to seeing some of the great jazz shows they have scheduled featuring Jackiem Joyner (July 10), Greg Adams and East Bay Soul (July 12), Chris Standring (July 17), Steve Oliver (Aug. 7) and Jeff Lorber Fusion (Aug. 9), among others!

The Pageant of the Masters is the Festival of Arts’ crowning jewel. I saw it for the first time last night, and was engaged in enchanting amazement for 90 minutes as real people posing (in extremely authentic looking costumes and theatrical makeup) to look exactly like their counterparts in the re-creation of original pieces of classical and contemporary works of art. The stage show of “living pictures” is performed nightly in the outdoor amphitheater with a professional orchestra, original score, live narration, intricate sets, sophisticated lighting and hundreds of dedicated volunteers.

The Festival of Arts is open daily, 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., July 6 through Aug. 30, and includes Art, Jazz, Wine and Chocolate ($15 with purchase of Festival of Arts admission) on select Thursdays, and Jazz on the Green (free admission with purchase of Festival of Arts ticket) twice monthly on Saturdays. Here is the schedule:
